Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
